Ransom Everglades sailing
Ransom Everglades School was second of 16 high schools during the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association District Regatta in Miami.
By finishing second, the Raiders qualified for the Mallory Cup, the national championship regatta for high school sailing in the two-person C420 class. The Mallory Cup National Championship is in Chicago.
The district tegatta included schools from Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and the Caribbean. Ransom hosted the two-day event which sailed off its shores on Biscayne Bay.
Antilles School (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) and Ransom scored the same low point total (102), but Antilles won on the second tiebreaker. Antilles and third place finisher (Fort Lauderdale) St. Thomas Aquinas also qualified for the national regatta.
“This was a great day for our sailing program,” Ransom Everglades’ Head Coach Ganzalo Crivello said. “It was an important regatta, and our sailors were able to maintain a great deal of focus in order to do as well as we did.”
Led by skippers Nathaniel Johansson and Alex Swerdlow, Ransom Everglades placed in the top five during 23 of 30 races.
To win the district regatta, Antilles School erased a 10-point deficit from the first day.
“After the first day, I told the team to stay confident and consistent in every race,” said Kim Murtha, the Head Coach for Antilles School. “Our sailors responded, and we were able to win the regatta.”
Murtha added: “We really look forward to representing the South Atlantic District at the Mallory Cup. We have been sailing the district event for years, and this regatta was quite impressive with the improved level of quality and depth of all the teams involved. Ransom was extremely talented, and we were fortunate to win.”
The Mallory Cup National Championship features the Top 20 teams from the seven districts of the Interscholastic Sailing Association. More than 450 high school teams are members of the association with nearly 3,500 sailors.
