2013 Golden Bear Regatta

PCISA Golden Bear
Regatta Report
February 22-23, 2013

59 teams arrived at Treasure Island Sailing Center on Saturday morning, welcomed by crystal clear skies and light NW wind in the forecast.  A northerly component to the wind is not ideal in Clipper Cove and it gets very shifty.  The Race Committee had some difficulty chasing the wind around in the first 2 hours of racing, but eventually a westerly filled in at about 9 knots.  Unfortunately that di not last and the north kicked back in causing some delays.  Only 2 full sets were completed for both gold and silver fleets for the day, even after almost six hours on the water.

On Sunday a dying northerly greeted the fleet with 14 knots during rigging, but quickly died to a shifty 5 knots.  The first half set was completed in these tough conditions before a complete die-off.  The breeze took about an hour to clock around and come out of the west at a perfect 6-8 knots.  So after plenty of tacos it was some great afternoon sailing.  Due to the 4pm cutoff time only two sets were completed on Sunday, for a total of four sets for the regatta.  Point Loma dominated the gold fleet taking both first and second places overall.

A special thanks is needed for the Bay Area Youth Sailing Board and local coaches, who worked very hard to put this regatta together before and after the racing.  Sailing out of TISC in the winter requires installing and the removing all the floating docks used for launching and rotations.  This is a major project and takes about 4 hours of strenuous work on both sides of the regatta.
